October K-Pop Comeback Reviews #2 // fromis_9, iu, weki meki, iz*one, april & jeong eun ji

I have more comeback reviews from October! Last time I reviewed comebacks for multiple male artists, which you can read here if you missed it. One was a soloist and one was a debut. This time I have two soloists and two debuts and I’ve only really heard from one of the artists before so this should be fun!

Fromis_9 – From.9

fromistracklist.jpg

About: The name fromis_9 is an initialization for ‘From Idol School’ and consists of 9 members. They were created from the survival program ‘Idol School’ and officially debuted under Stone Music Entertainment on January 24, 2018. They are now under the label Off the Record.

Members: Saerom, Hayoung, Gyuri, Jiwon, Jisun, Seoyeon, Chaeyoung, Nagyung, and Jiheon.

Fun Fact(s): Saerom and Gyuri are the best English-speakers in the group. Jiwon and Chaeyoung are former JYP trainees. Jiwon was a contestant on the survival program Twice was formed from. Seoyeon is a former YG trainee. Nagyung can speak Mandarin.

Love Bomb* – I’ve been hearing a lot about this song. Some people loved it while others didn’t. After listening, I can definitely see why some people would be put off by this song. I think that if I wasn’t already into girl groups, it would have taken me a while to like this song but I enjoyed it. 4/5

Dancing Queen – Two songs in and I can already clearly identify the group’s sound. This has a retro vibe, but whereas most of the retro-sounding K-Pop songs I’ve heard are on the funkier side, this one is more classical. I really enjoyed it. 4/5

Coloring – This is a great song too. Ugh they just debuted earlier this year but their songs are already soooo good. 4/5

Overall – I kept hearing a lot of buzz about this group’s debut because I think they were on some sort of survival show? (i was correct haha) Anyways, I wasn’t really anticipating their debut because I don’t really watch survival shows. I was impressed by their first release. I can’t wait for more from them. 4 Stars

IU – ‘Bbibbi’

bbibbicover

About: A South Korean solo singer and actress. She debuted on September 18, 2008 under LOEN Entertainment. She is currently one of Korea’s most well-known soloists.

Fun Fact(s): Her nicknames are ‘Nations Little Sister’ and ‘Nations Sweetheart’. She failed an audition at JYP and later JYP himself said he’d fire whoever let her go (lol).

BBIBBI* – This is a single from the solo vocal queen. It’s a good single. I don’t know if I love it or not… this is how I feel about a lot of IU songs the first time I hear it. The further I got into the song, the more I liked. I’m sure if I listen to it more I’ll end up liking it more. 3.5/5

**quick note: i listened to this song more and i love it now, just like i expected

Weki Meki – Kiss, Kicks

kisskickstracklist

About: Previously known as i-Teen Girls, Weki Meki is an 8-member girl group under Fantagio. They debuted on August 8, 2017. Their fandom name is ‘Ki-Ling’ and their official colors are cherry tomato and vibrant yellow.

Members: Suyeon, Elly, Yoojung, Doyeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy

Fun Fact(s): Elly can speak Korean and Japanese. Elly, Yoojung, Doyeon, Lua, and Lucy all appeared in the web drama ‘To Be Continued’. Yoojung and Doyeon were members of the group I.O.I formed from the survival show Produce 101. Many of the members have appeared in Astro‘s music videos.

Crush* – I already listened to this song and watched the music video. It’s a good song, I feel like it’s a mix of BlackPink and Red Velvet? I only listened to their song ‘La La La’ and I like this one a lot more than that title track so I think they’re improving. 4/5

True Valentine – As a side track, I don’t know what I was expecting but I enjoyed this. They rely more on rapping than Astro, which isn’t what you’d expect from a girl group but I like it. They do still have the signature girl group sound you’d expect, but they make it work. 3.5/5

Dear. – There’s a usage of guitar in this song, which makes the song slower and gives it a more ‘meaningful’ vibe. I liked this song a lot. 4/5

Overall – I’m happy I like these songs, since I didn’t like Astro‘s recent release that much. I want both groups to do good since Fantagio is having issues. Although they have a fun, energetic sound, they also sound more mature than Astro. I think this will make their music appeal to a wider range of people. 3.8 Stars

IZ*ONE – COLOR*IZ

coloriztracklist

Colors – I don’t really have anything interesting to say about this song. It didn’t blow me away, which is what I think is really important for the first song in an album and the first song from a new group. With that being said, it wasn’t bad. Just not great. 3/5

O’ My! – Everyone is titling their songs ‘Oh My!’, ‘Oh My’, and now ‘O’ My!’ this year in K-Pop haha. I think this title is blessed or something because all of these songs are AMAZING! 4/5

La Vie en Rose* – I can already tell that this group has a great selection of vocalists. It sounds like they have a rapper or two and I thought I heard some rapping in the last two songs but it’s not very present. I hope there’s more in the next few songs. I don’t like this song as much as the last one but it’s still good. 3.5/5

Memory – This song confirms my suspicions that this group has great vocalists. They do have room for growth as far as their voice development goes but that’s expected since they’re rookies. 3.5/5

We Together (IZ*ONE Ver.) – I don’t know if these are existing songs and they’re just singing their own versions or not but I’ll just review it as if it’s their own since I don’t know. It’s a nice song, I don’t really have much to say on it. 3.5/5

Suki ni Nacchaudarou? (IZ*ONE Ver.) – This title looks like it’s in Japanese and the lyrics of the song sound Japanese too. Ohhhhh are they covering Japanese songs?? If you know, please tell me. This sounds very Japanese and video game-ish. I like it. 3.5/5

Yume wo Miteiru Aida (IZ*ONE Ver.) – This song is the definition of build up. I feel like it’s constantly building up to something but it gets slower. I like this one too. 3.5/5

Overall – It sounds like they have a more cutesy sound to them than fromis_9. I like it, though, just not as much as their songs because I just prefer their style more. But they still have a lot of potential and I think this was a strong debut release for them. 3.5 Stars

APRIL – the Ruby

therubytracklist-e1542210786326.jpg

About: A 6-member girl group under DSP Media. They debuted on August 24, 2015. Fandom name is Fineapple (haha).

Members: Chaekyung, Chaewon, Naeun, Yena, Rachel, and Jinsol.

Fun Fact(s): Chaekyung is a former member of the Japanese girl group Puretty (but she’s Korean). She has also been part of multiple project groups. Naeun is a former JYP trainee. Rachel joined APRIL in November 2016 with Chaekyung. Rachel also lived in America for 4 years. Two members Somin and Hyunjoo left the group due to the concept they were doing and health issues/wanting to pursue acting, respectively.

Oh-e-Oh – Typical girl group song. I mean, I don’t have much to say? It’s good, I guess, but not really anything special. I feel like this is something another girl group like Twice could easily pull off. 3/5

Oh! My Mistake* – This song has more depth behind it. I can actually differentiate groups with this song compared to the last one. I still don’t *love* it but it’s not bad. 3.5/5

Story – A good song as well, but nothing special? 3/5

Love Clock – This was a good song as well, but I didn’t really see anything special about it. 3/5

Oh! My Mistake (Instrumental) – I like the instrumental for this song a lot. Maybe even more than the original song? 3.5/5

Overall – I didn’t dislike any of the songs, but none of them stood out to me. It all sounded a bit too ‘cutesy’ and honestly it just doesn’t doing anything for me. I think Twice is the only girl group that call pull off the cutesy concept for me. This album doesn’t have me excited to listen to their other stuff, unfortunately. 3.2 Stars

Jeong Eun Ji – Hyuhwa

hyehwatracklist

About: She is part of the girl group APink under Plan A Entertainment. On 18 April 2016 she debuted as a solo artist with the mini-album “Dream”, but she’s still part of the group.

Fun Fact(s): She acted in the dramas ‘Reply 1997’, ‘That Winter’, ‘The Wind Blows’, ‘Reply 1994’, ‘Lovers of Music’, ‘Cheer Up!’, and ‘Untouchable’.

For Hyehwa – This is a piano intro to the album. There’s also a background mix with what sounds like birds chirping so it gives a feeling of spring or rebirth. 3.5/5

Being There* – This song is really beautiful. I think I’ll add this song to my chill playlist because it’s really calming to listen to. 4/5

Seasons Change – This album focuses a lot on Eunji’s vocals. I love that since I only heard a bit of her vocals in the new Apink album since that was my first time listening to their stuff. There’s a simple piano in the background of these songs and I think this might continue for the rest of the album. Hopefully there’s a more uplifting song though. 3.5/5

The Box – This song is already different than the other two. There’s a piano still but it’s more jazzy and a bit upbeat. I like this song because it’s more diverse than the last two songs. This is more of what I wanted from the other two. 4/5

Thinking about You – I really like this song. It’s upbeat like the last song. The thing about Eunji’s voice is that it works with both slow and upbeat songs but she doesn’t need to change her tone much to fit in the genre of her choice. Her voice is unique and fits with many different music styles naturally so it sounds good no matter what. 4/5

B – This brings us back to the slower concept. But, it’s different. Instead of a piano we have a guitar. Whereas the first two songs of the album sounded sad and a bit depressing, this song has a more hopeful feel to it, like a breakup happened but it’s not necessarily a bad thing because they experienced happiness and will always have the memories to look back on (my interpretation, i could be completely wrong). 4/5

Farewell – This is also similar to the last song, just like the first songs of the album. I like how she’s doing this. Maybe the next song will be slow like the beginning to end the album off. 3.5/5

Sae-Byuk – Yup this is slower. But it does get faster as the song progresses. Good. 3.5/5

Overall – I don’t listen to slow songs that often because then I get sleepy but I can definitely see myself adding a song or two from here to my chill or reading playlists. I liked hearing Eunji’s vocals on their own without a lot of extra noise and other members. I think that’s why solo careers are really important for idols that’re in groups. 3.8 Stars

There were loads of comebacks in October. I would have to say that I liked the boy comebacks more than the girl comebacks but also I favor boy groups more than girl groups so I’m a bit biased.

It’s already the middle of November and there have been a few comebacks that I will review. Let me know if there’s any in particular you want me to check out and write a review for 😀

What was your favorite comeback from October? Did I mention your favorite or did you like a different comeback that I didn’t mention? Let me know!
