IT’S ALMOST JULY Y’ALL!
We’re already halfway through the year and I honestly don’t know how that happened so quickly?? I always say stuff like this but I honestly can’t believe that July is in a few days (my birthday is on the fourth yay!) I feel like it should be February or April at the latest. Anyways, y’all know why I’m here today! I’m here to do the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag, as expected from all of these posts flying around in the last week. This has become such an annual thing in the book blogging community and this will be my second or third time doing it. The original post for this tag is here. I think I was tagged by somebody but I can’t remember who it was.
Reading Challenge Progress:
I thought that I’d publicly shame myself by showing y’all my current progress on my Goodreads reading challenge. I obviously find motivation from exposing myself on my blog for you to see.
This is a frustrating number because I haven’t been in a slump or anything but I started getting loads of eARCs on NetGalley and a lot of books sent to me for review to the point where I got overwhelmed last year. I’m still slightly struggling with this mistake of mine halfway into 2018.
I’m not stressed over this anymore because I think I finally got a handle on how to deal with books I read for review purposes and books I read for fun. I have only read maybe three books solely for fun this year but I’m taking an entire month to focus on that once I am comfortable enough on with my books for review pile number.
i have become so mature and rational this year wow talk about character development
Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2018?
At first thought, there aren’t any books I read this year that have really wowed me. But then again, I can’t remember what I read last month. Okay so looking back now, I have three choices to choose from! But… I have to narrow it down to one!
Pachinko gripped my heart from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very end. I recommend this to Historical Fiction fans and just… everyone that I come into contact with, really! If you’re reading this post right now, stop for a second to pick this book up because you won’t regret it. Read my review here.
also, does anybody else think that this would make the PERFECT k-drama?? because i would watch the crap out of it
Best Sequel of 2018 So Far?
I literally have only read one sequel in 2018 so far haha! This is actually quite horrible of me but I also haven’t been reading many books just for fun. Most of my reading has consisted of ARCs and books sent for me to review. But one of these ARCs I got happened to be the sequel to a book I read last year so I got lucky.
That book is Legendary by Stephanie Garber, the second book in the Caraval trilogy!! I loved this book so much more than the first one. Read my review for Caraval and Legendary and you’ll understand how much of an improvement Legendary was for me.
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want to?
Since I haven’t been reading much for ‘fun’ lately, I am crazy behind on new releases. There are two books in particular, though. They’re not exactly ‘new’ but they’re 2018 releases that I own yet haven’t gotten to yet.
They both have the most gorgeous covers I’ve ever laid my eyes on and they’re two of my most anticipated 2018 releases. I know I’ll love them but I just haven’t! read! them!
Most Anticipated Release of the Second Half of 2018?
Honestly? I don’t know what’s coming out for the rest of the year… time for some research lol! Here are my top 3 from my findings:
I’m actually so excited for Muse of Nightmares even though I thought Strange the Dreamer was mediocre.
The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is what I am most ecstatic for!! I loved Gentleman’s Guide so much and if Lee does the rep correctly, we’re finally going to get an aro/ace (not sure which Felicity classifies as) female protagonist in YA Historical Fiction.
And of course What If It’s Us is going to be amazing because Silvera and Albertalli are like the most amazing pairing in YA contemporary ever.
Enough said. Honestly I think a large portion of the book community was highly anticipating this book… and was disappointed. If you want my in-depth thoughts on it, read my review here.
Honestly I wasn’t really surprised by any books this year so far? I guess I just loved books I thought I’d love and disappointed by books I was hyped for.
However, I was surprised by how much I ended up enjoying The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls. I read it pretty quickly and I loved the sisterhood element. I expected something mediocre and cheesy which is completely different than what I got.
Favorite New Author?
I wouldn’t say that I have a new favorite author but Gloria Chao and Tanaz Bhathena are two authors I’m definitely going to keep an eye on. Their next books sound interesting as well so I’m excited to read what they end up coming out with in the future.
Newest Fictional Crush?
I don’t really have any new fictional crushes from my reads this year, but I do love Darren Takahashi from American Panda. He read as someone that would make the perfect first boyfriend. I don’t know if I would want him for myself because him and Mei go so well together but he’s nice and sweet and smart which are qualities I value in pretty much anybody.
Newest Favorite Character?
This year I’ve actually met a lot of new favorite characters. It’s hard to just choose one so I narrowed it down to three.
Genie Lo is such a strong character inside and out and I honestly love her so much. I thought that she would have annoyed me more than she did but I ended up loving her. Blue is such a precious cinnamon roll! I love Simon as well, but I favor Blue a bit more. Finally, I couldn’t leave out Mei! She is honestly such a great character… she never annoyed me once! I want more books with her *cries* but there aren’t going to be any!
Book That Made You Cry?
I’m an emotionless robot so I don’t cry when I read books, but here are two that brought me very close to tears this year:
Something happens in Pachinko and it just… it absolutely broke my heart. If you read this book you probably know what I’m talking about. Remember For Me had a sick boy that died and a character dealing with Alzheimer’s. It was so terrible having to read about their families grieving them.
Book That Made You Happy?
I mention American Panda so much here but I’m not even going to apologize y’all already know how much I adore this book. I smiled and laughed out loud while reading it. Ship It ended up being kind of disappointing for me, but it still made me smile to have a book revolving around fandoms, fanfictions, and fangirls.
Favorite Book to Movie Adaptation You’ve Seen This Year?
Um… I haven’t seen any?? Unless Black Panther and Infinity War count! I really need to see Love Simon urgh. OH! This reminds me that I still haven’t written my Infinity War review, though I honestly don’t think it’s going to happen? It’s just been too long and I honestly don’t remember enough about the movie to concisely put my thoughts into a review, sorry!
Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year?
Oh boy… I think my reviews during the first like three months were some of my best written ones ever but now I feel like they’ve become mediocre
- Pachinko by Min Jin Lee // generations of immigrants and how they are able to survive against all odds
- A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena // raw and emotional and everything YA needs right now
Most Beautiful Book You Bought or Received So Far This Year?
They’re just so gorgeous, okay?
What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year?
These are the current ARCs I have been approved for. Blood Will Out is my next book I’ll be reading after my current read which was sent to me by the author last year (oops!) and the other two I won’t need to read and review until September and October so I have time for those (thankfully!)
How are you doing on your reading challenge so far? What has been your favorite and least favorite read of the year? Let me know!
