My Favorite Korean Singers // me fangirling & sharing heavenly vocals

As y’all know, I’m a huge fan of K-Pop and K-Dramas, and really Korean food and culture as a whole. I have a lot of post ideas but I didn’t feel like typing up any of the posts until I thought about this idea and although it’s not book-related I decided that I’d go ahead and share some of my favorite Korean singers.

Some of these singers will be from groups I like and some will be solo artists – I hope y’all enjoy this list! And it’s not in any particular order because how can you possibly expect me to properly rank them? It’s like choosing a favorite book or author! It’s impossible!

**there’s also going to be a rapper version so look forward to that

Taemin

I freaking love Taemin so much. He’s part of the boy group Shinee, but he also has two solo albums which I have listened to and have absolutely loved. He has a more chill vibe compared to his group. Plus, he’s an amazing dancer. He has a unique style that I wasn’t sure if I liked at first, but I quickly got used to his style and have consumed all of the music of his I could get my hands on.

Move was the first song I heard from him. I love the way he incorporates a lot of dance moves that would usually be restricted to only females. It shows just how talented and unique he is.

Favorite Songs: Move, Flame of Love, Love, Solider, Rise.

Jeong Sewoon

Sewoon is a newbie but I’ve listened to both of his mini-albums that he’s released since his debut August of last year. He ranked 12th place in the show Produce 101 Season 2, so he was one position away from debuting with the group Wanna One which is so surreal to think about because I couldn’t imagine him in a group to be honest.

He also has a more chill vibe to him (the above song is one of his more pop-sounding tracks) but it’s a much different feel than Taemin. Since he’s only 20, his music isn’t as mature-sounding but it’s also not quite immature like you might expect from an artist his age.

Favorite Songs: Just U, Slower Than Ever, Baby It’s U, Never Mind, Close Over.

Jeong-Sewoon

IU

I haven’t listened to many of her songs (literally only like two) but I like her voice and I don’t listen to female artists very often, just due to a personal preference. She’s quite young as well (24) but she’s been in the singing business since she was 16, I believe.

I admittedly only listened to this song at first because it features G-Dragon, but I stayed for IU’s vocals. The way she sings is kinda similar to Taemin. They both have a voice that is kind of like a whisper which makes it so soothing to listen to. She’s simply beautiful and I love how simplistic she is.

Favorite Songs: Palette, Twenty-Three.

i really want to watch this drama she’s in

Youngjae

Youngjae is one of the vocalists of GOT7 and he has such a strong voice. His parts are always my favorite because of his powerful voice. When I first listened to GOT7 I was so curious about who sung his parts because I loved his voice so much.

He doesn’t have any solo songs that I know of, unfortunately, which is why the video I attached is a compilation of him singing but I love how whether he’s singing for fun and goofing off or singing seriously his voice always sounds perfect. Basically, if you listen to a GOT7 song and you’re curious about who the strong vocalist is – it’s Youngjae!

favorite songs is going to just be the GOT7 songs i think his voice is able to shine the most in

Favorite Songs: Confession Song, Just Right, You Are.

Kihyun

Kihyun is my Monsta X bias – I first fell in love with his voice in the survival show he was on where the group was formed (the clip below). He’s the main vocalist in Monsta X and his parts are usually my favorite singing parts of their songs.

rip jonghyun

He has such a soothing voice but it’s also very powerful. He has a really broad singing range and can go from low to high within a matter of a few seconds. His voice also fits for a lot of different types of songs from slow to pop to hip hop – he’s very versatile.

**same thing with youngjae goes for kihyun and anyone else that’s in a group w/o solo work

Favorite Songs: Stuck, Beautiful, Shine Forever, All In.

when he laughs it’s almost always silent xD

Jisoo

I’m trying to include as many female idols as I can haha but I literally don’t listen to them like at all so it’s difficult, but I do like a few of BlackPink‘s songs and Jisoo’s voice stands out a lot when I hear their music (they all have unique voices, but her’s is really pretty).

She has a great balance in her voice. It’s not as high-pitched as a lot of female voices are, it’s more on the lower side but that doesn’t stop her from hitting high notes when they come around.

Favorite Songs: Playing With Fire, her cover of BigBang‘s Let’s Not Fall in Love – which is in the video above.

i love her hair so much

Taehyung

I had to include somebody from BTS! Tae has such a beautiful voice – it’s really deep which isn’t what you’d expect if you looked at him. He gets some of my favorite parts in BTS songs and I just find his voice really unique and calming.

Isn’t it just amazing?? I love everyone’s voices in BTS for different reasons but Tae’s has always been my favorite because of the warm feeling his voice gives off when he sings. His voice is very versatile too. He can have the low but soothing voice (like in the Adele cover he did above), hardcore rough (like in War of Hormone) and he can also hit high notes really well.

Favorite Songs: War of Hormone, DNA (even though it’s so auto-tuned – live performances are much more my preference in this case), Hold Me Tight, Boy In Luv, It’s Definitely You.

taehyung

Leo

I have recently within the last few months fallen in love with Vixx – they all have wonderful voices (especially live) but I think I love Leo’s the most. His voice really stands out in their songs and his high notes are so powerful.

A lot of the times when someone is performing live they aren’t able to hit the high notes like when they’re in the recording studio, but Leo is different. He’s known for being able to perform live with perfect vocals.

Favorite Songs: Error, Eternity.

leo
i keep my hearts stored in my hair too

Baekho

He’s the main vocalist of the group NU’EST and I don’t know what it is about his voice that I like but it’s very even. He’s able to evenly distribute his vocals and has a nice balance.

**fun fact: some of the members of the group seventeen guest star in this music video as the bullies!

Since he sings like 90% of this song (line distribution who?) I decided to choose their song Face as an example of his vocals. I’m sure there are probably better examples out there but this is the first song that came to mind.

Favorite Songs: Face, Where You At, Love Paint.

baekho

Honorable Mentions:

I could really go on forever here, but this post has gotten really long, so I’ll list some of the honorable mentions.

  • Jimin – I feel like I’m betraying him since he’s my BTS bias but I didn’t want to use more than one member from the same group and I like Tae’s voice slightly more sometimes.
  • Woozi – I only recently mastered all of Seventeen‘s names so I’m not good at identifying their voices in songs, but from what I’ve heard from Woozi, I really like his voice.
  • Hyungwon – I love all of Monsta X’s vocal line but Hyungwon’s voice I’ve found is quite unique. He barely gets any lines, though.
  • Rose – BlackPink‘s other vocalist. These girls can really sing!
  • Daesung – I haven’t gotten to know the vocalists of BigBang much so I can’t tell their voices apart much like I can with G-Dragon and TOP, but I’m pretty sure Daesung is the member known for his high notes.
  • Sanha – All of Astro have really great vocals but I think that their maknae has my favorite vocals out of the group.
  • JB – Along with his fellow member Youngjae, JB’s voice is very powerful, but it’s more on the softer, mellower side.

Out of the ones I mentioned, who is your favorite? Any I didn’t mention that you think should be mentioned? Do you have any favorite singers? I could do a non-Korean favorite singers list but it wouldn’t be as long – if you’re interested let me know!

    1. Tae has this voice that just… captivates you. It’s hard to explain. Yes!!! I love Mamamoo!! I’m just getting into them recently but they have great voices

    1. Thank you so much for all of your comments *cries* I opened my email and it made me smile.
I’m so happy you love Nu’est and Vixx!! They’re very underrated, in my opinion. It’s have haha – it can be fun but also stressful because I seriously love all of the members so they’re constantly fighting over the top spot xD

    1. There have been so many comebacks recently oh my god!! It’s insane – if I didn’t follow it so closely myself I’d be behind as well haha

  1. OMG YAZ, NU’EST!! (I’m sorry, gonna tear up at one side for a moment because I’ve been their fan since they debuted and they were victims of terrible management and weren’t doing good at all until they appeared in PD101. So yeah, seeing your mention of Baekho is like, super touching.)

Anyway, awesome list btw (I nearly squealed when I saw Sewoon’s name too ❤)! I think Minhyun (of Wanna One and Nu’est), Ha Sungwoon (of Hotshot and Wanna One), and Kim Jaehwan (Wanna One) have pretty good vocals too. Jungkook’s (BTS) vocals are beautiful as well and Jin’s has been improving a lot too. I’ll add Heize and Long D to the list too actually. Haha, but I’m biased soooo 😂😂😂

    1. Nu’est are like, super underrated?? They’re so talented so it’s unfortunate that they only recently got their first win (after what, 6-7 years??) but I’m happy that they’re getting more recognition because they really deserve it! I haven’t checked out Wanna One yet (i’ve been meaning to though!!) I was going to add Kookie as well, but I didn’t want to add too many members from one group haha. Yes, Jin has improved so much in both his dancing and his singing, I’m so proud of him!

      1. IKR??? I got so emotional over their win and now that they’re getting recognition, I hope that they’ll renew their contracts when it ends in 2019/2020 and walk a flowery path for just a little longer.

Oh, you should!! Wanna One’s contract is ending in 2019 too and their official accounts etc might be removed after that (like what they did with IOI). Their latest album is set to be released this coming 19th March too.

Also, understandable. There’s gotta be a balance haha.

        1. Gahh they’re contracts – I hope they get renewed!! Thanks for the info!! I knew they wouldn’t be lasting long since they were formed from Produce 101 s2 which is honestly kind of why I have been hesitant to stan them if that makes any sense?? Like I don’t want to get too attached to them as a group

          Liked by 1 person

          1. No prob! 🙂 And I get you, I was hesitant too but then I thought, if I don’t get attached to them now, then that chance will be gone when they disband…Like sure, I can support them individually when they go their own ways too, but it will be something new and different. So yeah 😂

  2. IU ❤❤❤😍😍😍

    TAEMINNNN ❤❤❤😍😍😍

Honestly, these two are the only ones I really know about, like the ones I really did research on back then.

Post-2012, I became a more mellow fangirl, I just know enough to identify the members in the newer groups (post-2012) and never did excessive research and obsessively watch their variety shows or any other shows they’re in like I did with older groups haha

    I love this post! ❤

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha I’m a bit of the opposite. Since I only recently started liking K-Pop within the past year I like the newer groups more. I do like some of the oldies like Super Junior – I just don’t like know all of the member’s names and such.

  3. This is such a great list! Girl, we have the same Monsta X bias haha 💛 I so agree with you!

I have to say, by the time I got to Tae I was really sufferin’ but it’s him that made me warm inside (he’s the only ult bias of mine you have on here- definitely check out SEVENTEEN’s Joshua and Red Velvet’s Wendy in terms of vocals omg they’re???? so good).

    Great post!

    1. Kihyunieeeeee ~ I love him so much! I had a feeling about Joshua but I forgot what his voice sounds like so I didn’t add him haha. I’ll definitely check Wendy’s vocals out!

      1. Joshua is the one who begins their latest MV, Thanks:)) he’s another ultimate of mine haha

        Also yess Kihyun~~~ he’s so 💛💛💛💛

            1. Listened to the song again the other day (i always forget what it sounds like for some reason?? but i listen to a lot of songs so it makes sense why i’d always forget :p) and OHMYGOD THAT BOY SINGS LIKE AN ANGEL

              Liked by 1 person

              1. I KNOW RIGHT OH MY LORD I can’t tell you how many times he bias wrecked me;;; and he’s my bias?? How does he do that idk??? It’s like he keeps trying to go higher on the bias list?? But there’s no higher mountain to climb here, he’s already on top????

                Liked by 1 person

                1. Gahh I know the feeling, girl. Jimin is constantly bias-wrecking me even though he’s been my bias since the beginning?? Like how is that possible??

                  Liked by 2 people

    1. Gahh I completely forgot about BAP and Block B hahaha – they have some amazing vocalists as well! Yes, K-Pop is filled with some really amazing singers 😀
