My 2018 Writing Goals // finishing my first draft & my first time sharing my cringe-y old writing

I love writing posts about writing. Especially my own writing because although I get anxious about sharing my writing with others, it helps me a lot to get input from others about whether my ideas are actually good.

plus sometimes the only motivation i get to actually write is by sharing my writing if that makes any sense

So here I am sharing my writing goals for 2018! I fell in love with my two WIPs that I started last year due to Camp NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriMo in November. I wrote more last year than any other year in my life. I hope to top that this year.

Writing Goals:

  • Finish my first draft. Although I have two WIPs at the moment, I would like to focus more on trying to finish the first draft of We’re All Beautiful since I’m further along with writing that opposed to These Memories Shall Burn. I’ve never finished a first draft before so *fingers crossed*
  • Start a new WIP. I know that I do want to start writing something new this year, I just haven’t gotten any ideas yet. But I like having something else ready for me to write for whenever I don’t feel like writing in my other books.
  • Write something outside of my comfort zone. Mostly, I would like to try and tackle something fantasy. I love fantasy but it terrifies me. I get so overwhelmed just thinking about everything I’d have to do to prepare for writing a fantasy novel.
  • STOP EDITING WHILE I WRITE. I am the worst at this. I back-space and scroll to a random place in my novel to check something I forgot and then I start reading and before I know it I’ve edited five pages *hangs face in shame*
  • Stop telling myself I suck. This probably won’t happen. My writing will suck no matter what I do, I just need to stop telling myself that it sucks and instead tell myself that it will get better with practice and editing
this is the cutest gif ^o^

Starting Something New:

Very vague, but I have loads of books that I’ve started over the years and have only like five pages written and – well – I’ve been thinking of making them into something. Here are the ideas (and snippets, oh lord, these are awful):

  • New Book. This is literally what the file is called on my computer *sigh* Basically the protagonist is an orphan and a mute – meaning she doesn’t have a tongue thus she can’t speak. This is a fantasy sort of but I don’t know if there’s going to be magical elements or not. She gets caught by these dudes that plan to sell her to the kingdom as one of the Prince’s slaves. That’s as far as I got. I don’t know how I’ll be able to write an entire book where the main character can’t even speak, but I got a few pages down so I guess it’s not impossible?

  • Fantasy Book. I wrote 83 pages in this book and completely forgot it existed! I gave up writing it because a) I had no idea where my story was going b) i had no idea what my magic system even was there was glowing fish and that’s basically it c) my characters were so bland and all sounded like kids and d) my writing is SO CRINGE. But I’m going to show it to you in 3, 2, 1!

this is literally the least-cringey section i could find in the entire book, probably due to the lack of dialogue

  • Summer Book. This is the cringiest of them all. I seriously considered stopping here and lying to y’all about that being it and just leaving it out of this post completely but I promised you guys that I would show you the cringe. This book is contemporary but also kinda fantasy-ish. The main character has a power to look into people’s dreams, I guess (I had weird things happen to him without any idea of what his power was so I have no clue what his powers are). Anyway, he does something bad in school and is sent to jail but then he gets saved by some FBI dude who crashes his car while they’re in it and then he escapes to a forest on the run from bad guys and meets a girl that lives in the forest and yeah. I don’t know, I was like 12 when I wrote this! So. Whelp. Here we go. I’m so scared right now, I’m wiggling around in my chair right now like a fish out of water.

quick side note: throughout the 25 pages i wrote of this, the pov constantly changes from first person to third person and it’s taking all of my willpower right now to not go back and fix it

i’ve reached maximum level of cringe

I am so relieved to say that those were all of the old cringey books!! I will make it up to you with snippets from We’re All Beautiful and These Memories Shall Burn!

Snippets From Current WIPs:

We’re All Beautiful

Some of y’all might’ve seen this one already because I posted it on Twitter but you blog readers haven’t! Basically, I included the drunk piggy back ride thing that’s common in K-Dramas and I’m proud of myself for it haha.

I’ve been getting a lot better with dialogue which is why I wanted to share this snippet. Usually it sounds really, really bad but this scene’s dialogue has a nice flow to it.

These Memories Shall Burn

I made Naira and her relationship with her mom very complicated. They’re not always at each other’s throats but at the same time they’re always cautious of each other. I find their interactions the most interesting to write and is what I’ve been writing a lot of lately.

See how this relationship could be complicated? I didn’t intend it this way, but it kind of just happened.

me every time i re-read these snippets – yes i’m a fangirl over my own books

I love these books so much. I can’t wait to finish writing them because I have a really good feeling that there will be people out there that’ll like – maybe even love – them as well.

I just poured out my heart and soul here, sharing my best of the best and best of the worst writing I have at my current disposal. Give me feedback or I’ll just sit here awkwardly, withering in my own embarrassment.

  1. Well thank you for sharing your new and old writing! I still struggle with putting my writing out there because I get so insecure about it but it‘s always so great to see others share theirs!

Your old writing isn‘t cringy at all! I think any writing is good writing because as long as you write SOMETHING, you‘re practicing and it‘s the only way to learn and get better! Although I always cringe at my writing whether it‘s new or old so I shouldn‘t be the one to give advice XD

Good luck with reaching your goals though! I also want to try and finish a first draft of at least ONE of my projects haha and hopefully start another one as well! I‘m always hit with so many ideas and I don‘t really know where to start 😂 I also started a fantasy novel during NaNo but I quickly gave up because it was too much work at the time XD

And omg that Rapunzel gif at the end ahhhhh I‘m in love 💖

    1. It took me a while to convince myself to put my writing out in the world, trust me, it was very difficult. It definitely takes time 🙂 I was actually considering cancelling this post to post but was able to stop myself. Thank you so much, that means a lot (though it was pretty cringe – haha) Ahh good luck on finishing your first draft!!!! We can push each other to finish ours, we can DO THIS!!!

  2. ayyy your wips sound amazing… and i admire you for having written anything more than a paragraph. i have basically three hundred word docs on my laptop that are all un-fleshed-out ideas that i want to get rid of but can’t. (i’m very sentimental.) also, have you read a quiet kind of thunder by sara barnard?? it’s from the pov of a selective mute and it’s soooo good!! good luck with your stories, i love kdramas!! xD

    1. Thank you so much!! It was hard to push myself to write and post this. It’s good that you keep that stuff because you never know when you might want to make something out of those ideas. I haven’t but it’s on my tbr!!

  3. Love the Tangled gif! Fangirling about your own work is awesome, and is kind of the point of being a writer! Those moments of excitement are the best 🙂

I LOVE the kitchen face-off from These Memories Shall Burn! It’s so tense, and just that tiny bit of characterization and dialogue makes me feel like I understand so much about the characters and the story already.

    1. Getting excited about your own book is definitely one of the best feelings in the world. Thank you so much!!! That means a lot to hear! Thank you for reading 🙂

  4. Sorry I don’t think my first comment would have made a lot of sense 😁. What I meant was that sharing something that embarrasses you is really inspiring to me. And seeing that your writing has come so far makes me more determined to improve my own writing efforts

    1. It’s okay, I understand what you meant 🙂 It means so much to hear that this inspired you. That’s probably the best thing that could have come from this post so thank you for saying that!!

  5. I reads like a k-drama! I love it!! I’d happily read more…. I don’t think your other work is cringe worthy either. I LOVE to edit as I go, lol. I get my best ideas doing that… it does mean my motivation flags easier as you aren’t finishing. So to each their own, there is no right or wrong way. ❤ Thanks for sharing these!!.

    1. Ahhhh I’m so happy you think it reads like a k-drama! I definitely get loads of my relationship dynamics from k-dramas. It’s so addicting to edit as you go – and I agree, it makes me think I’m not getting anything written since I’m going back and making revisions instead of writing new things so then I get discouraged. Thank you for reading!! 😀

  6. Omg I’m so proud of you sharing these things!! You should feel proud of yourself for working up the courage to do this. 💖 And aahh good luck with all your goals! I’m POSITIVE you’ll finish a first draft, especially when you’re so close! AND OMG YOUR SNIPPETS ARE SO GOOD!! I love your books so much. 😍

    1. Ahhh thank you *gets knocked over by your compliments* It was SO hard to convince myself to write this post and I was up last night constantly thinking of cancelling it so it wouldn’t post this morning but I let it go gahhh. I’m so happy you liked it!!!

  7. i felt the same way reading and posting my old poetry – that it was soo cringy. (mine really is garbage tho lol.) but your writing is refreshing to read! its nice to read the set up and conflicts you have with your characters. And wow girl that is so many pages, even if they do go unfinished they are cute worlds with interesting characters. i have written 3 paragraphs for my story, i keep rewriting my first chapter. i can’t wait to see more between the couple.

    1. hey, i bet it’s not garbage!! maybe to you, but as people say ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure’ 🙂 aww thank you so much!! i’ve never heard anybody call my writing refreshing before *blushes* hahaha i honestly get surprised by my page count sometimes… i have 180 pages in we’re all beautiful haha but i know that i’ll end up scrapping about half of it since i brought the book in a different direction than what i was originally intending. that’s a great way of thinking of it, actually! even if it’s not the best it’s still something you created and wrote. you should keep expanding on that! it’s hard, i know, but it won’t be perfect the first time 😀

  8. OMG THESE WERE ALL SO GREAT. I love your dialouge it’s awesome and you’ve been writing so many things and ugh, I LOVE IT ALL SO MUCH!! Your characters in every snippet all seem real and have great perspectives. I honestly didn’t find them cringey, hope you’ll share more! and the “I beg to differ line” IS HILARIOUS. Excuse me while I choke on my coffee

    1. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ❤ I try so hard to make them as real as possible because the worst thing is having bland 2D characters (my worst fear) Hahahahah yes I love that line as well, the main reason I chose that snippet 😀

  9. You’re so generous (and brave!) to post examples of your writing and you have nothing to feel remotely cringe-y about. I enjoyed seeing how much you’ve changed/grown as a writer, and both your current WIPs are amazing. The dialogue for We’re All Beautiful just left me wanting more!

    1. Thank you ❤ It's hard for me but it also feels really good to share my writing. Ahhhhh Thank you so much!!!! I've been pouring everything I've got into them haha.

  10. I NEED MORE OF “WE’RE ALL BEAUTIFUL.” I’m sorry, I had a moment because you are an amazing writer, and what a cute relationship!!! ❤ also, I so much struggle with going back and editing as I write and it's a problem and that's why I've been writing for months and only have 24 pages *cries*

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Awwww thank you so much *cries* That means a lot! I try and make their relationship as cute as possible haha 😀 You’d think that it wouldn’t be that hard to keep writing without going back and editing but NOPE, it’s such a struggle!

  11. The funniest thing about this isn’t your old snippets (they’re not that bad, trust me), it’s that you’re writing a book about someone that hates coffee (while you love coffee) and I’m writing a book about someone that loves coffee (and I don’t like coffee) hahaha
I love the mother-daughter relationship you wrote! It’s one of my favourite things to read and write, that and friendships. But parent-child relationships are always so complicated, it’s the best!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. HAHAHAH the irony! AND YOU DON’T LIKE COFFEE?!?!?! I feel like our friendship has been a lie! *kidding, we’re fine :D* Yes, the relationships between parents and their children in both We’re All Beautiful and These Memories Shall Burn are very complicated for different reasons. It’s hard to write but also easy if that makes any sense and it adds so much more to my books.
