August Monthly Wrap-Up // Explaining My Absence, Bad Reading Month & Author Event

Hello fellow readers of the world! Guess who’s back *back again*. It’s been about a week since I posted something and I just haven’t been active in the online community (except twitter – you can always find me there) for a large chunk of August, but that shall all be explained in this post!

Books Read:

Ha…ha… you know how in the title I mention a bad reading month?

I didn’t finish a single book in August.

I just haven’t felt like reading! And I’ve been super busy (I’ll explain later). I didn’t completely abandon reading because I did make it nearly halfway through a book, but that’s it.

Let’s hope September is better for me, but I’m still ahead of my reading challenge!

Books Reviewed:

I Believe in a Thing Called Love

Strange the Dreamer

Zara Zyon and a Maelstrom of Secrets

TV Shows Reviewed:

I wrote my first ever review for a K-Drama! I really enjoyed this drama and if you’d like to read more K-Drama reviews on my blog, please let me know!

I wrote a guest post on someone’s blog, and I also contributed to a post on another blog!

How to Start Writing a Book – Write Through the Night

Teens in the YA Community – Word Woonders

I only wrote 7 posts this month, which is half of what I usually write, due to me being busy and not scheduling as many posts as I should have. Hopefully I won’t make this mistake again in the future haha. Now, onto what made me so busy this month!

Listing My House:

Yup. So my family has been renovating the house we currently live in since we bought it about 7 years ago, but now we have finally finished the house and are listing it to sell. It’s surreal because I feel like I’ve lived in this house for so long (for me, it’s nearly half my life!)

But anyway, for most of the month, we had contractors and painters working on fixing our house – and we’ve had issues with contractors and such in the past, but nothing as bad as what we experienced this time.

I swear, you can’t find good contractors where we live! The first group of contractors that came to our house messed up everything they worked on and they never cleaned up after themselves when they left. We fired them but the new contractors we got weren’t good either!

I don’t want to delve into the details, but we finally finished everything – the project taking an entire month instead of two weeks at the most like we originally planned – and then cleaning had to be done.

Oh. My. Freaking. God. You have no idea how much paint these painters got on the floors, on light switches, on windows, on wall plugs – I’ve never scratched off so much paint  in my life!

Just cleaning the house and getting it all organized so that we can take pictures took WEEKS! Now, if we lived in a normal-sized house (ours is around 4,000 sq. ft. and we have acreage) it wouldn’t have taken nearly as long, but it was an absolute nightmare!

We finally got everything finished, so hopefully the house sells fast so that we can move into somewhere to rent and settle down and just take a breath. We’re planning on going on vacation to relieve from this stress. I think we all need a good vacation haha.

Author Event:

So on the brighter side of things, I went to an author event held at a library near me and met some authors! The authors in attendance were Maurene Goo, Sandhya Menon, and Ashley Poston.

There were snacks that correlated with the books written by the authors and the decorations they had went so well with everything. You can see that I completely fangirled over the Descendants of the Sun poster because I’m currently watching that drama.

The cupcakes with the book covers on the top were delicious and so cute! My sister and I would’ve gotten another after the signing but they were all gone haha. They also had pink lemonade which was SO good!

After the panel, we all lined up to get our books signed! I didn’t have Geekerella by Ashley Poston so I just got When Dimple Met Rishi and I Believe In a Thing Called Love signed. I was way more nervous to meet Maurene Goo and Sandhya Menon than I was when I went to the previous signing the library had a few months back because I hadn’t read the other author’s books, but I read and loved both of these books so much so I had a mini fangirl attack.

They were both so nice and I actually talked to them and held a somewhat normal conversation! Usually I just awkwardly stand there while they sign my book and make small talk but I completely fangirled over K-Dramas with Goo and Menon complimented my dress!

I’m still in fangirl shock btw

Now onto what I watched this month – I watched way more than I read – my book haul, etc.

What I Watched:

With all of the construction going on and physical labor my entire family had to do in order to get our house ready to list, we’ve been so physically exhausted and stressed by the end of the day so we’d unwind by watching some TV together.

With my family we started The Strain and we all really liked it at first, but now I think we’re all kind of bored of it… I don’t know, I just feel like the writers of the show don’t know what to do anymore haha. But it was a really interesting show at first!

We also started watching Criminal Minds and Friends! We only watched the first 1 or 2 seasons of Friends during the beginning of the month and only watch it every once in a while and we started Criminal Minds about a week ago. We’re getting close to finishing season 1 and we all love it!

As far as movies go, we watched Baywatch, Spiderman: Homecoming, Baby Driver, Security, The Fate of the Furious, and some more I forgot. We usually don’t watch this many movies but it’s been a while since we sat down and binged some so that’s what we did! I enjoyed all of these quite a bit and if you’ve watched any great movies lately, please let me know! We’re on the lookout for some more to watch.

By myself, I finished Reply 1997 this month and after that I started another drama called The Lover. This was the first drama I watched on DramaFever and since I don’t have a membership I have to watch ads *sigh* which got annoying, but this drama was so addicting! I won’t call it the best drama ever, cause it isn’t, but it’s an addicting one. After I finished that drama I started one called Oh My Ghostess. I’ve only seen one episode so far but I’m liking it and can’t wait to see what happens.

I’ve been watching more YouTube this month than I have in previous months (I took a few months off of YouTube) but I’ve just been watching KPOP stuff haha. Oh yeah! I got into KPOP this month! Mainly BTS, but I finally started watching some KPOP videos on YouTube and I want to punch myself in the face for waiting so long to start. If you follow my twitter, you’re probably used to my BTS fangirling by now.

No, I’m not obsessed
Definitely not
I took a Buzzfeed quiz to see which member I am and I got Jimin and it’s actually so accurate!
I can’t choose a bias and you won’t make me!

This month, my blog fell like you would have guessed by me not posting that often, but I did reach 470 followers! This is 30 less than the goal I set for myself at the end of July, but I couldn’t have predicted all of the stuff that would happen in August so I won’t beat myself up over this.

My blog had 1.4k views in July and in August it got 1.1k which isn’t bad considering the lack of posts! So thank you to all of y’all who read my posts religiously! I appreciate you so much. For September, my goal is to get to 550 followers! I think that’s a reasonable goal, and I’d like to match my July number and get 1.4k+ views.

I barely wrote in my book this month, which is unfortunate, but I finally introduced a character I have been waiting to introduce and things are finally beginning to happen!

Besides my wip, I also participated in The Scribbler’s Challenge hosted by May @ Forever and Everly. I wasn’t able to participate for the entire challenge, but I was proud of the work that I did write and it was a lot of fun to participate in.

Er… I didn’t post a single BookTube video in August. In my defense, I don’t like filming when there are strangers in the house because I feel weird but I will try and film something in September!

I also haven’t been watching BookTube. I tried to get back into it, but my attention span has lessened lately because I’ve been so tired by the time I get the chance to finally sit down and watch something. So any video longer than 5 minutes of someone just talking about a book will cause me to fall asleep. But I’ll try and watch some BookTube in September as well, but I can’t guarantee anything!

Book Haul:

I didn’t purchase any books this month, but I did get two books sent to me for review by authors.

A Taxonomy of Love comes out January 2018, so when the author sent me the book I was so happy to get a copy because I have a few months to read it before it comes out haha. And Alex C. Vick sent me a copy of her book last month, but it got a new cover so she sent me another copy with this new cover! I’m so excited to read both of these books!

Now, before this post gets too long, I’d like to set some goals for next month!

September TBR:

I really don’t want to pressure myself to read too much this month since I’m still in a slump, but I would like to finish Antisocial, the book I read almost half of in August, and Breaking Magic since it got sent to me by the author and I really need to read and review it soon. Antisocial, as well as the other two books are NetGalley books so I want to read those and get them out of the way this month.

Coming Up on Blog:

  • (Hopefully) more guest posts
  • Review for The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (maybe)
  • Tags and Awards
  • Discussions (if I can finish any of the ones I’ve already begun writing!)

I’ll go back to my regular schedule of posting random posts on Monday and Friday and book reviews on Wednesday. As long as nothing unexpected pops up and I have time, my blog’s schedule should be the same.

It also depends on my reading, but I might also not have many book reviews in September since I didn’t read anything in August.

My goals from last month were:

  • Finish two classes for school
  • Don’t slack on writing
  • Write in my journal at least once a week
  • Reach 500 blog followers
  • Comment on other’s posts more often

I only accomplished 1 1/2 of these since I was busy working on the house. I finished Health in school and I’ve been writing pretty consistently in my journal.

My goals for this month are:

  • Reach 550 blog followers
  • Catch up on all of my beta reading (people have sent me their work for me to beta read and it’s piled up haha)
  • Reach 55k words in book (I’m currently at 51k so this shouldn’t be difficult)
  • Keep a consistent posting schedule

I think I can accomplish all of these! Most of this just has to do with me not being lazy with my writing.

So that was long! I hope you enjoyed it, nonetheless and I apologize for my absence! You can always find me on my Twitter, though, if I’m absent here. Hopefully September will be an all-around better month in my personal life and in my reading life.

In the comments, let me know what you did in August and what you’re planning on doing in September!

  2. I get how you feel about moving. My family recently moved and sold my childhood home. It’s a weird to know that someone else is going to be living in the place I grew up in 😶.
Hopefully you’ll find more time to blog this month and interest to read 😊.

    1. My family has moved a lot while I grew up (even with the house we currently live in, we had it rented out for a year and moved to California) so I’m used to moving, but this is the place we’ve been in the longest so it will feel strange. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have one house you lived in your entire life and then moving out of it.

  4. I hope your house will be finished soon!
Good luck on your writing! I think I’ll be picking it up soon too because I’ve barely written anything since the end of July… oops. My motivation has disappeared as well but I think if I start, I’ll get more motivated 🙂
The author event looks so cool! It seems like you had a lot of fun!

    1. Yeah, it’s finished, it just needs to sell haha, thank you!
Starting is sometimes the hardest part, but once you start, motivation usually isn’t that much of a problem 😀 It was a lot of fun!
