Beautiful People – August

Last month I participated in Beautiful People for the first time and it quickly became one of my most popular posts of all time. So. I decided that since it was a big hit, why not do it again this month?

You might be wondering what Beautiful People is… well, Beautiful People is a writing blog meme that Cait @Paper Fury co-hosts with Sky @ Further Up and FurtherThey post questions at the beginning of each month (generally around the 5th) that you can answer on your own blogs! It’s designed (A) to help you get to know your characters better, and (B) share your writing projects!

What are they addicted to/can’t live without?

John – Can’t live without his headphones, croissants, and KPOP (specifically BTS).

No, it’s not BTS cause they’re my favorite KPOP group
That’s totally not the reason

bts

Madison – Can’t live without coffee, art/drawing, and her family (especially her mother).

Madison and her mom are like Lorelai and Rory from Gilmore Girls

Name 3 positive and 3 negative qualities about your character.

John – Positive: plays piano REALLY well, owner of the cutest smile in the world, cares about others more than himself (is that positive??). Negative: not confident in himself, too scared to take risks, closes himself off to others.

Madison – Positive: draws REALLY well, killer fashion choices even if she doesn’t know it, stands up for what she believes in. Negative: impulsive, always scared of messing things up with people, not confident in herself.

Are they holding onto something they should get rid of?

John – He’s trying to let go of the past, but is having trouble doing so. This mixed in with the emotions he’s been pushing back his entire life causes problems with both his mental well-being as well as his relationships with others.

Madison – Likes to keep what happened in the past, in the past. Doesn’t look back, only wants to look forward.

If 10 is completely organized and 1 is completely messy, where do they fall on the scale?

John – He’s grown up in a household with a Korean mother so she’s always been breathing down his neck when it comes to being organized. He’s probably either a 9 or a 10.

Madison – She lives in organized chaos. She knows where everything is, but to everybody else her room looks like a complete mess.

What most frustrates them about the world they live in?

What frustrates them both the most are people who are ignorant and criticize people because of their ethnicity/sexuality/gender/etc. They’ve both dealt with this throughout their lives and are in a constant battle.

frustration

How would they dress for a night out? How would they dress for a night in?

John – Black. And black.

Madison – For a night in she’d wear sweats and a baggy t-shirt or pajamas and on a night out she’d wear a knee-length blue dress to match her eyes.

How many shoes do they own, and what kind?

John – Only two. Black converse and formal shoes for piano performances.

Madison – Around five. Black converse, winter boots, heels, and slippers.

Do they have any pets? What pet do they WISH they had?

John – He doesn’t have one until later in the book. He gets a black kitten with white paws and names him Jimin. It’s going to be the most adorable thing.

kitten

Madison – Doesn’t have any pets but prefers dogs over cats.

Is there something or someone that they resent? Why and what happened?

John – Homophobia and his father. If I tell you exactly what happened, it’d be a spoiler for my book so…

Madison – Racism and John’s father. Racism because she deals with it basically every day and John’s father for the same reason as John.

What’s usually in their fridge or pantry?

John – Korean food because his mother controls everything their family consumes haha.

Madison – Mix between junk food and ‘healthier’ options. She tries to get her parents to eat healthier but she doesn’t control their grocery shopping.

I loved answering these questions! I actually learned a few new things about my own characters when I answered some of them. I also noticed that my characters show some similar interests as I do haha.

    1. I’m so happy you like them!! 😀 That’s what I love about this! I never would have thought “what do they have in their pantry…?” Hehe I bet he’d let you cuddle with it

  1. Your characters sound three-dimensional, and even though I haven’t read your book I am SO EXCITED THAT JOHN GETS A KITTEN.
It is so interesting to get to know my characters and notice the similarities between them and myself- it happens a lot! I don’t usually do it on purpose.
Great job answering this questions! I did Beautiful People this month as well. I had great fun doing it, but it also made me notice how much character development I could still work on. I think that there are too many underdeveloped characters in YA fiction but we can change that!

    1. Yeah exactly! I have an entire outline for them but then when it came to answering some of these questions I drew a blank and had to think “Oh. What would their opinion be on this…?”
