Every once in a while a book comes along that completely captivates you and blows all the expectations you had for it out of the water.

That is what I’ll Give You the Sun was for me.

It took me around 40 pages until I was hooked, but once I was hooked, I was HOOKED! I seriously could not put this book down! I read it every single chance I got and even chose to read this at night instead of watching my K-Drama… yeah, if a book does that to me, it’s got to be freaking AMAZING.

I LOVED Noah so much! He was all awkward and introverted and weird and his relationship with Brian was the most adorable thing.

“I love you,” I say to him, only it comes out, “Hey.”
“So damn much,” he says back, only it comes out, “Dude.”
He still won’t meet my eyes.”

That cute quote from the book right there is only the tip of the iceberg, my friends! Noah is in the closet and a new boy moves in next door and he develops a massive crush on him. They become friends and he’s terrified that his friend will think differently of him if he confesses his feelings and URGH I was so nervous for Noah.

I felt like I was walking on a tightrope how tense I got during certain parts of this book because I felt for these characters and what they were going through so much!

Jandy Nelson has a writing style that is so unique and wonderful that I was sometimes left sitting there in utter silence just re-reading a sentence or paragraph from amazement at how well the words were knitted together.

“I gave up practically the whole world for you,” I tell him, walking through the front door of my own love story. “The sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything, I gave it all up for you.” 

The thing I love most about these characters is the fact that they’re flawed but they learn from the mistakes they make and they know how flawed they are. Nothing bugs me more than a flawed character not realizing how flawed they truly are.

I didn’t love everything about this book. I didn’t like Jude much as a character, but she did grow on me by the end of the book. I also found her relationship with someone in the book to be a bit insta-love-y and didn’t really care for it, if I’m being honest.

The ending also wrapped up a bit too quickly and I feel like there could have been another 20 pages at least so that the ending wasn’t as rushed. Besides that, the pacing of the rest of the book was perfect for me.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

I would highly recommend this for people who like contemporary books that have a good balance of grief and loss, growing up, and relationships (platonic and non-platonic).
