Y’all, I don’t know how but it’s already June! We’re already halfway through 2017! Where has the year gone?! Anyway, what better post to… post then the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag? This is kind of a staple in the book community once we reach the middle of the year so I thought I’d go ahead and do it!
I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but a lot of blogs I follow have been doing this post lately so I thought that I’d join in.
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2017?
Yikes! This is a very difficult one because I’ve read a lot of great books this year so far! I’ll just choose my top three:
I’ve got spoiler-free reviews for The Raven King and Words in Deep Blue (click on the titles) and will be having one up for THUG soon.
2. Best Sequel of 2017 so far?
This is the only sequel I’ve read this year and I did really enjoy it! You can read my spoiler-free review here.
3. New release you haven’t read yet but want to?
I actually own these books! Getting these in the mail has probably been the highlight of the past week if I’m being completely honest! I’m holding off reading them until next month, though, because a lot of books that are on my TBR for this month I’ve owned for a long time and really need to get to. SO. MUCH. SELF. CONTROL.
4. Most anticipated release of the second half of 2017?
There are so many! I’ll just list three, though.
There’s controversy surrounding two of these but I don’t care about that because it’s for stupid reasons (Maggie is white and is writing a book about Mexican culture – I believe that’s why there’s controversy around that – and BookTubers getting published always seems to raise controversy). But I’m still so excited for these three! They all sound so interesting!
5. Biggest disappointment?
You can read my ranty (non-spoiler) review here. Let me just say that the hype really got to this book.
6. Biggest Surprise?
I honestly wasn’t expecting much from this book and probably wouldn’t have even read it if I hadn’t won it in a Goodreads giveaway. I’m happy I ended up reading it though because it’s a new favorite of mine!
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)?
Definitely Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera! I read their newest books this year and absolutely loved them both so I’m going to have to read their other books that they have released (especially Becky’s since her Simon book is being turned into a movie!).
8. Newest Fictional Crush?
I don’t really have many fictional crushes so although I read The Raven Boys in 2016 and fell in love with Adam then, I fell even deeper in love with him when I read the rest of the series this year.
9. Newest Favorite Character?
I loved Starr from The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas so much! She’s so strong and just a wonderful character. From Cress I chose Carswell Thorne even though he’s not a new character to this series I didn’t really like him as a character until I read this book.
10. Book that made you cry?
I don’t cry during books EVER, but this book was so close to making me start sobbing. I’ve also just been reading really emotional books lately which is strange because I usually don’t read those kinds of books so two other books that were pretty close to making me cry were The Hate U Give and Words in Deep Blue.
11. Book that made you happy?
A lot of things in this book made me smile and laugh and just overall put me in a good mood, but one of the events that stood out for me was seeing the impact of the legalization of gay marriage and how it effects the families who have gay parents.
12. Favorite book to movie adaptation you’ve seen this year?
Yikes… have I seen any? The closest thing I’ve seen would be either Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (it is based off of a comic) or 13 Reasons Why, which is a show. But I haven’t read the source material for either so I’m not a good judge on whether they stayed true to the original written books or not. I did enjoy them both, though.
13. Favorite review you’ve written this year?
I’d have to say my Caraval review because I think it was very well-structured and a lot of people seemed to like it as well.
14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought or received this year?
Oh gosh this is a hard one! When I got When Dimple Met Rishi and I Believe in a Thing Called Love in the mail (which are both beautiful books as well) I also got the To All the Boys I Loved Before by Jenny Han box set and the books are so aesthetically pleasing, but also there are so many other books I’ve acquired this first half of the year… I think I’ll go with this one:
Usually I don’t win such beautiful books in giveaways but I did win this one and it’s so shiny! And there’s a moth on the actual hardcover book itself under the dust jacket.
15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Well I did start a reading challenge at the beginning of the year where I would try and read books set around the world but I have kind of abandoned that, so I don’t know… it would be nice to finish a few series. I’ve already finished two so far this year which is such a big accomplishment for me but it’d be nice to finish some more.
That’s it for this post! Let me know if you did this tag so that I can check it out or let me know some of your answers to these questions! There’s also usually a question about my reading challenge and how it’s doing, but it wasn’t there this time… Here’s how it’s going:
My Reading Goal for 2017: 40 books
Books Read: 23
So I’m currently 5 books ahead of schedule according to Goodreads which is awesome! This is the same goal I had for last year, but I fell into a slump for the last 3 months of the year so I didn’t reach my goal, so I’m so happy I’m doing good so far on my challenge! Let me know how your’s is going so far!
I’m really looking forward to Maggie Stiefvater’s newest release!

Congrats on being ahead of your goal!! I love that feeling of being ahead, haha. Caraval is one book I’ve been specifically avoiding because of the hype…a few years back I read The Night Circus primarily /because/ of the hype and found I didn’t really enjoy it because it fell flat (not because it wasn’t good), so I wanted to avoid that mistake with this carnival-themed booked. (I just went back and read your Caraval review, haha, so I guess I’ve made the right choice.)

You’re welcome~ I am one book ahead, which is just enough to feel like a miracle to me 😛 I also tend to fall behind in the latter half of the year so we’ll see how long I can keep this up for…

I’ve been wanting to read everything lately which is why I’m so ahead haha. I tend to fall behind later in the year too, which is why I’m trying to stay ahead now just in case haha

I definitely agree with Caraval, I was so bummed about that one since it was so hyped up. Awesome post!

Yeah the hype definitely got to Caraval 😦 I’m glad you liked this post!

STRANGE THE DREAMER IS SOOOOO PRETTY! The UK cover is pretty as well… I just like the blue and golden one better though. And I just finished reviewing History is All You Left Me on GR and basically: I’m torn and disappointed, but hoping I like Silvera’s other books more. 😦 I still need to read Caraval myself to see if I’ll like it or not, and I NEED THUG AGH!

I used to not like the US cover much but it’s grown on me. Still prefer the UK one though (sprayed edges!) Awe sad to see you didn’t like History as much as I did 😦 Maybe you’ll like another one of his books more? THUG WAS AMAZING! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Totally agree about Caraval. That book was such a disappointment.
