It’s Wednesday! This means it’s time for Top 5 Wednesday, a weekly meme created by Lainey @ Ginger Reads Lainey and now hosted by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes. You can check out and join the Goodreads group here.
This week’s T5W post will be a bit different than my past ones. The topic is summer reads and I decided that I would divide this into two sections. In one section I’ll list 5 books that I’ve read that I think are perfect summer reads and then in the other section I’ll list 5 books that I plan on reading this summer. Also, most summer reads are defined as light contemporaries and that’s probably what most of this list will be.
Books That Are Perfect Summer Reads:
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
I think I talk about this book way too often on this blog but whatever, it’s one of my all-time favorites. This book takes place in summer and is a coming of age tale where our protagonists meet and become friends and their relationship just develops from there.
Rebels Like Us by Liz Reinhardt
This is a book I read earlier this year and I really enjoyed it. This book caught me by surprise because it was a book I hadn’t heard anything about and had won it in a Goodreads giveaway. It follows a girl of mixed race who moves from New York to this southern town and she deals with racism and she meets a cute boy (of course) and then events fold out.
Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley
This book deals more with one’s grief as well as change in a person’s life, but it’s still a really enjoyable read. This book was just so beautiful and it also takes place in Australia during the summer. I also have a review for this up on my YouTube channel.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Light fluffy contemporary read that’s relatable since the main character is a fangirl (hence the title) and is both socially awkward/anxious and writes fan-fiction. I really enjoyed this book and I’m always recommending Rainbow Rowell books because they’re sure to put a smile on your face.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This is a book more on the mysterious side. If you’re looking for a quick mystery book about a family of rich people and a girl who is trying to figure out what happened the previous summer, then this is the perfect book for you!
Books I Would Like to Read This Summer:
A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir
I loved the first book in this series and I was anticipating this book so much last year but once I got my hands on it I never got around to reading it for some reason. This summer it’s my goal to read this book! I know I’ll love it I just don’t know why I’ve held it off for so long!
The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy by Jenny Han
I own this trilogy in the bind-up version (not this beautiful version, the old, ugly covers) and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this trilogy so I thought why not tackle this series this summer? It seems like the perfect summer read and contemporary is for summer so I’ve got to read some contemporary.
A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin
If you didn’t already know, I’ve been working on this book for months. So long, actually, that Goodreads emailed me asking me if I’m still reading this book or not because it’s been so long! Probably around 300 days by now… yeah. This summer I’m going to focus on reading this book and I will finish it! I’m ahead of my reading challenge so I can afford to spend a lot of time reading just this book for a month or so if I have to.
The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare and some other people
Magnus Bane is without a doubt one of my favorite literary characters of all time so I need to finally read his book of short stories! I’ve had this book for way too long and I just need to read it! Especially since I want to read The Infernal Devices sometime this year as well and catch up with all of Cassie Clare’s books.
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
I’ve had this contemporary book for ages and still haven’t read it. So many people seemed to love this book and I finally want to knock it off my TBR pile because it’s time! It’s finally time to read the books I’ve been holding off for so long.
So that was it for this week’s Top 5 Wednesday! I mixed it up a bit and added double the amount of books I usually have on here but I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless! Let me know what books you think are perfect summer reads as well as some books you plan on reading this summer! Also let me know if you’ve read any of the books I mentioned above!

We Were Liars has been on my shelf for too long. I really wanted to read it when it came out – the characters sounded a bit Meg Rosoff.

I’ll Give You the Sun and Bane Chronicles are just okay for me… but I’m excited for We Were Liars! I’m also curious about Jenny Han’s summer trilogy, but so many people have complained about the main character I’m confused haha!

I’ve heard great things about Rebels Like Us. I might have to pick it up this summer. I read the Summer I Turned Pretty series a couple of summers ago and I adored it. It was such a cute love story but there were a few harrowing issues in there too😊
